Chakvi

Chakvi is a Black Sea coastal climatic resort, located on the shores of the Black Sea and the banks of the Chakvistsqali River, at an elevation of 30 meters above sea level. Hydrogen sulfide chloride-hydrocarbonate and sodium-calcium mineral waters have been discovered within the territory of Chakvi.

Humans have inhabited Chakvi since the Stone Age, and a Bronze Age treasure has been discovered here. Chakvi was one of the first centers of Georgian tea production. In 1885, engineer-colonel Alexander Solovtsov established a tea plantation on 1.5 hectares near the Chakvi station. In the 1890s, Russian entrepreneur Popov planted Chinese tea varieties across 14 hectares in Chakvi, Kapreshumi, and Salibauri. In 1899, he also built a tea factory equipped with English machinery. In 1895, the Imperial Estates Department planted a tea plantation on 16 hectares in Chakvi. To supervise the tea production, a 23-year-old Chinese youth named Lao Jonjao (Liu Junzhou) was invited from China
