The fortress is located in the Shuakhevi Municipality, in the valley of the Maretis Tskali River. Sections of the fortress walls remain standing on all four sides, with the western and northern walls being the best preserved. The structure is built of undressed stone. Archaeological evidence indicates that the fortress was originally constructed in the 12th–13th centuries and subsequently restored during the Late Middle Ages. Two wine cellars (*marani*) have been discovered within the fortress grounds, as have traditional clay bread ovens (*tone*). A rock-cut, *qvevri*-shaped pit—likely used as a water reservoir—was found in the central part of the fortress.
