One of the unique spots in Batumi where you can feel the pulse of the city is Europe Square. Annually, the New Year's tree is installed here, along with many fun activities and musical festivals. Notably, in recent years, this place has hosted numerous concerts at the international level.
The architectural image of the square features 19th-century buildings that were designed by European architects and, in the past, belonged to the rich people. In 1893, the square was the last stop of the Baku-Batumi railway route and bore a strategic purpose. Europe Square is adjacent to the former Mariinski Prospect, one of Batumi's main thoroughfares known for its classically styled beautiful buildings.
The exquisite match of new buildings and facades on Europe Square is most visible and eye-catching at night.
On one side of the square, there is a pedestal with a statue of Medea, one of the heroes from the Greek myth "Argonauts," holding a golden fleece.
The myth goes that in the seventh century B.C., Greek Argonauts arrived in Colkheti in search of the Golden Fleece. Bewitched by her love for their commander, Jason, Medea assisted the Greeks in stealing the Golden Fleece - a symbol of Colkheti's prosperity and fled her homeland with them.
A fountain in the center of the square is a popular spot for children during hot summer days.
There are excellent cafes and restaurants around the square where you can sample the best Adjarian and European cuisine.
