The fortress dates back to the 11th–13th centuries and is located in the Shuakhevi Municipality, atop Mount Mtavariangelozi, at the confluence of the Chvanistsqali River and its right tributary, the Otolti River. It is built on a leveled rock surface. The northeastern section of the wall is relatively well-preserved, whereas the far southeastern section has collapsed almost to the foundation level. The fortress features three observation slits. The northern curtain wall is comparatively intact. A tower stands at the fortress's northwestern corner. The entrance is located in the central part of the western wall, where steps have been carved into the rock. The fortress also possessed a second tower. The walls of both the tower and the fortifications are constructed from local stone. Additionally, the complex included a staircase and a tunnel situated beneath it; the staircase and tunnel provided access to the citadel, from which a wooden ladder led down into the inner fortress area. The staircase consists of 12 steps. The tunnel served a secondary purpose as well, functioning as a means to manage internal water flow, provide a gathering point, facilitate filtration, and supply water to the reservoir located in the courtyard. A wine cellar was also discovered in the fortress courtyard.
